Cornerstone of Community
It’s been said you can’t judge a book by its cover. In the case of the Mammen Family Public Library, its importance can’t be judged simply by its fancy facelift.
It’s true we’re proud of our renovation and expansion. The new Hill Country, modern façade merges with the surrounding countryside. Expanded parking allows greater ease of use. The larger, relocated butterfly garden is being improved and enhanced.
Yet, as the center of the Bulverde community, our library’s value goes way beyond its good looks. The expansion proves that point. The addition includes a 4500-square-foot Children and Teen area where kids will enjoy their own programming rooms, library, patio and space to study and socialize.
Five new study rooms offer students and adults a quiet place to study or meet. A makerspace and two classrooms provide areas where creative learning can be fostered. For larger community meetings and gatherings, the library’s spacious meeting room has been enlarged from 1,300 square feet to 2,850 square feet.
Even better, the expansion allows members to explore their creativity with the latest technology. Visitors can try their hand at using 3-D printers, laser cutters, green screen and video recording equipment, or more familiar equipment such as sewing machines and screen printers.
All the great amenities that existed before the renovation remain and have been updated and enhanced, though some have been relocated. An expansive collection of books, movies and magazines can be found, as well as DVD and audiobook collections. Online resources include downloadable e-books, audiobooks and magazines, software training, career resources and free language learning.
A community hub, the Mammen Family Public Library is the go-to place for several educational activities from concerts to computer classes and craft days. Staff offer regular, one-on-one instruction focused on digital devices, computer basics, social media and common software.
The library also is a mobile community amenity. Using the “Trekker,” it has been able to take services out to the public, such as story times and popup libraries at local schools, pregnancy and senior centers.
The business community can also find plenty of resources at the library. A special collection of more than 500 titles focuses on small businesses and includes small business training courses throughout the year.
A unique forum for education, creativity and social networking, the library contributes in a meaningful way to the quality of life in our community. It is a haven of learning that brings together neighbors of all ages seeking knowledge, excitement and friendship.
